OCR: DAVE MCLELLAN 1975, Dave Mclelan became the second chief engineer of the Corvette, succeeding Zora Arkus- Duntov. Like Zora, Mclellan had no qualms about pushing Corvette design and development to its limits. "Dave had a tough act to follow- and follow it very well he did to create an outstanding all- new Corvette in 1984," said Karl Ludvigsen. Mclellan chose to talce a stronger technological approach to the car and became the brain behind what some have deemed the best Corvette in history, the ZR-1. During his tenure, Mclellan raised Corvette's horsepower by 50 percent, upgraded the fuel in- V E jection and refined the handling. He retired in 1992 after 17 years as Corvette's chief engineer. He is best remembered as the "car guy" who was dedicated to making one vehicle better and better.
